About:
Clad in red, white and blue, West Islip School District’s Bayview Elementary School students and staff honored and celebrated local heroes with a Veterans Day car parade on Nov. 10.
Students and staff lined the circle driveway waving their flags and holding signs of gratitude. The West Islip Fire Department raised its flag high over the parade’s entrance. Bayview Elementary School Principal John Mullins welcomed honored veterans and guests, including Town of Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter and West Islip Board of Education trustee and veteran Thomas Compitello. To kick off the ceremony, members of the Bayview chorus and band played “The Star-Spangled Banner,” “God Bless America” and “America the Beautiful.”
Forty-two cars joined in this year’s parade. After each car was individually announced, the veterans stopped at the exit for a photo and hand-delivered message from their loved ones. Inside the elementary school, Bayview honored local veterans who could not be part of the celebration on their “Wall of Heroes.”
