About:
We have been having the Fundraiser for Hydrocephalus since 2017. We shifted away from our Play for a Cure Breast Cancer Awareness game in order to have a fundraiser for someone we knew personally would be impacted by it. One of my co-workers has a son who suffers from Hydrocephalus (water build up on the brain). So my players wanted to do something to help support and bring awareness to the cause.
The technology for the stints (helps drain the fluid off the brain) is not great and the stints they use can last a day, a week, a month or years; they do not know how long they last, so patients have to constantly be ready for it to stop working and have another surgery. So we decided to raise money to donate to the Hydrocephalus Association in order to hopefully help improve their research and technology.
Both the JV and Varsity team help out for the fundraiser, so this year that’s 31 field hockey players. They volunteer their time during their lunch period for a week where they sell raffle tickets for raffle baskets. Most of the girls partner up and create a basket to raffle off. Some of them buy and create their own theme basket, and others go out in to the community and ask for donations and have shops donate items to advertise their business and make a basket with their items. On top of the raffle baskets, the varsity players and my co-worker sign up to be “pied’ in the face after the game (a plate of whip cream), so people donate to pie a player.
This year we raised close to $1,500 and 100% is donated to The Hydrocephalus Association.
