About:
Our team tries to do one philanthropic event each month of our season. This month we contacted Alison from the Hudson Valley Walk for Autism. I offered our assistance in running the event or just for us to walk with anyone who needed help getting through the walk. She was overjoyed to get some help especially with such a large group. We arrived early and helped vendors carry in their equipment and helped set up different tables. Our overall “job” was to assist members of the autistic community with activities they may struggle with on their own. This meant helping fill sand art with kids, playing bingo and trivia, as well as walking alongside individuals on the actual walk part of the event. We even completed dance activities during a special aerobic segment called “moving pieces”. One of the main goals of the event was to educate individuals about Autism and bridge the gap between all individuals and their differences. Overall we were so happy to help out and as a coaches and teachers it is so moving to see the girls work with individuals different from themselves and learn more about the members of our community. I also wanted to shout out some members of the John Jay Cheerleading team and Lourdes Football team who worked alongside us at this event. (information provided by Coach Catherine Oriani)
