We ordered purple socks and I created and made custom ribbon decals that we wore for the game in honor of the Joe. Liked you had noticed, we also used social media to help spread the word about the event and its significance. We ran a 50-50 raffle in hopes of raising more funds then just that of players and coaches donations.
In the spring of 2020, while the world was adjusting to life in lockdown from the pandemic, our trainer Joe was unexpectedly diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Joe’s cancer went dormant but reappeared. Our head coach wanted to honor him and raise funds for him. Especially after hearing Joe’s son was collecting donations for the NYC marathon he is running this fall in honor of his father and in memory of his grandfather. This is my first year on staff at Bethpage. I’ve had one brother battle cancer and lost a best friend to cancer. So this hit home for me a little extra. The kids were all on board since they see how hard Joe works to take care of us. All while stoically battling cancer. When you see another human being show up for work the day after chemotherapy every other week. It just makes you want to rally as a family and take care of your own in anyway possible.
