About:
The Students Putting an End to Cancer (SPEC) Club at Bethpage High School recently made their annual visit to the American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge in New York City, a home away from home for cancer patients and their caregivers during treatment. The students brought food, treats, and handmade cards to lift the spirits of residents, spending meaningful time engaging with patients and their families.
Led by longtime advisor Mr. Christopher DeStefano, who has guided the club for over 20 years, SPEC is rooted in compassion, service, and advocacy. From organizing Relay for Life events and fundraising for young patients in the school community, to supporting national efforts like Pennies for Patients and hosting bake sales and merch drives, SPEC students dedicate their time to making a difference.
With an average of 35–45 active members, the club exemplifies the strength of the Bethpage community. Students typically contribute dozens of hours each year through planning, volunteering, and outreach efforts — all aimed at raising awareness and providing support to those affected by cancer.
The SPEC Club continues to show what it means to lead with empathy and serve with heart.
