About:
During this year’s Pick a Reading Partner program at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, students not only pushed to meet their own reading goals, but they also thought about the literary needs of others.
This year’s PARP them was “Spread Reading Love with Acts of Kindness,” and students did just that by collecting 1,974 books to donate to the Book Fairies. The nonprofit organization collects reading material for people in need through the metropolitan New York region. Its goal is to nurture a love of reading across all age groups.
The book drive was spearheaded by student government, under the direction of teachers Kelsey Downey and Marissa Spalletta. They set up a bin in the lobby, which was almost always full thanks to their promotion efforts. Students and staff were encouraged to donate new or gently used reading materials including books for toddlers, children and young adults. The Book Fairies visited the school on April 12 to pick up the donations, which filled numerous boxes.
