About:
Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District marked Autism Awareness Month with Light it Up Blue Day on April 30. All students and staff were encouraged to wear blue. The school welcomed Edward Russo, a representative from the Long Island chapter of Autism Speaks, who accepted a check for $352 from kindergarten through fifth grade students as well as Assistant Principal Joyce Larkin and psychologist Dr. Christine Bertrand, right. The money was raised by Birch Lane families who bought puzzle pieces, which is the symbol used to reflect the mystery and complexity of Autism Spectrum Disorder.
