About:

At the Harborfields Central School District Board of Education’s Jan. 19 meeting, held at Oldfield Middle School, important student achievement and crucial community contributions were recognized.

First to be honored was Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School fourth grader Isidora Doeschner for winning the 2021 Maggie’s Challenge essay writing contest. Sponsored by Maggie’s Mission, a foundation dedicated to assisting families affected by pediatric cancer, the challenge consisted of 15 positive, feel-good activities. Students were asked to select and complete an activity and write an essay about their choice. Doescher, who was personally affected by retinoblastoma at age 3, submitted an exceptional essay on “being mindful.” As a prize, she and her family received a $250 gift certificate to Burgerology, Doescher’s favorite restaurant.

“Thank you, Isidora, for sharing your story and congratulations on your accomplishment,” said Dr. Danielle DeLorenzo, the district’s assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction.

Next, Harborfields Alliance for Community Outreach co-presidents Maggie Boba and Stacey Lauridia were recognized for their outstanding service to the Harborfields community. Established in 2001 by Harborfields alumni, and joined by involved students, HACO works to provide local families and their children with the basic human necessities of food, clothing and the essentials of daily living.

“I can’t tell you enough the impact HACO has had on our students as they participate in some of the fundraising, organization and food delivery,” Superintendent of Schools Rory Manning said. “Everybody that’s gone through Harborfields understands the difference that HACO has made in our community, and I can’t thank Maggie and Stacey enough for their tireless efforts.”

Lastly, the board acknowledged the Harborfields District Core Planning Committee for being a paramount part of the district’s five-year strategic planning process. The committee, consisting of teachers, staff, students, administrators, board members and community members, includes Danielle Amato, Sonia Armstrong, Denise Campbell, Kristen Dascoli, Dr. Danielle DeLorenzo, Charles Fellmeth, Robert Franco, Eric Gerde, Mary Ann Gunn, Emily Gutheil, Kelly Harley, Elizabeth Kelly, Michael Khan, Jessica Lowenhar, Suzie Lustig, Alison Matthews, Jennifer McCaffrey, Lisa Michalek, Kyrah Mullings, Rachael Risinger, Timothy Russo, Rose Scammell, Jeffrey Shade, Jennifer Washington and Mary Williams.
