About:
Cartwheel for A Cure started 6 years ago with two teams, Bethpage and Cold Spring Harbor. My daughter was on the CSH team and I coach the Bethpage gymnastics team and we wanted to have a fun meet together for charity. The CSH coach, Teri Kindelmann, has two daughters, Matison (9) and Charlotte (7) who both have Cystic Fibrosis. We decided that the kids had to raise at least 25.00 each and they would get a tshirt. The second year was 5 teams, third year we had 8 teams and now all 20 teams in the county are participating!. We now host it on two different days and sites so that all the teams could participate. On Saturday Jan 18 at Oceanside the following teams participated : GNN, GNS, Oceanside, Hewlett, Long Beach, Hicksville, South Side, Wantagh, Valley Stream, Roslyn
On Monday Jan 20, at CSH, we had: Bethpage, CSH, Plainview, Sewanhaka, Carle Place, Garden City, Port Washington, Massapequa, North Shore, Syosset
At the end of the meet, we start a timer for 3 minutes and the kids do continuous cartwheels. Then we ask each team what kid had the most cartwheels!
We raised over $10,000.00 last year and hoping to do the same this year. All proceeds benefit the Boomer Esiason Foundation for Cystic Fibrosis. The Cartwheel for a Cure meet is all about fun and fundraising! Each team has 15-20 kids per team so about 300 kids participated. It helped bring awareness to CF. The kids have alot of fun, and in keeping with Martin Luther King’s quote: “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: “What are you doing for others?”
