About:
The CCCSD Boys Soccer program once again turned teamwork into community impact through its annual Blue September Car Wash, continuing a tradition that has brought student-athletes together in support of prostate cancer awareness and research for more than a decade.
Each year, the program holds two separate two-hour shifts — one for the JV team and one for Varsity. Players spend their time washing cars while teammates stand along nearby corners encouraging community members to stop by and donate.
All proceeds from the event are donated to the Wilmot Cancer Institute, giving the players an opportunity to support a cause that reaches far beyond the soccer field.
The tradition began around 2011 or 2012, when Coach John Mahoney learned about Blue September, a prostate cancer awareness campaign that originated in Australia. Having seen many athletic teams rally around breast cancer awareness through pink-themed events, Mahoney recognized an opportunity to bring similar attention to a cancer that directly impacts men and their families.
As a coach of young men, Mahoney felt prostate cancer awareness was especially meaningful because it is something that could one day affect the players themselves, as well as their fathers, grandfathers and uncles.
Over the years, the event has become about even more than awareness.
For Mahoney, one of the most meaningful parts of the tradition is seeing teenagers willingly give their time to something that offers them nothing in return. The players are simply working together to raise money for people they may never know or meet.
That spirit of selfless service has helped make Blue September a tradition embraced by both players and families.
The team also proudly carries the message onto the field. Players wear special light blue and orange jerseys connected to the Blue September initiative, including during a recent game in which CCCSD earned a 3-0 victory.
Through the annual car wash, awareness efforts and commitment of its student-athletes, CCCSD Boys Soccer continues to demonstrate how sports can be used as a platform for something bigger.
By giving their time without expecting anything in return, these young athletes are helping raise awareness, support cancer research and show what it means to lead through service.
