About:
The Cheektowaga Central School District boys basketball program recently hosted its 3rd Annual Mental Health Awareness Night, using the platform of athletics to promote understanding, advocacy, and support for mental health.
What made this event especially impactful was the leadership behind it. Three Civics students took the lead in organizing the night, coordinating T-shirt sales, and hosting a staff dress-down initiative. Their student-driven approach highlighted the power of youth leadership and peer-to-peer engagement around an important and often difficult topic.
Through these efforts, the school community raised $505 for Mental Health Advocates of WNY, helping support vital resources and services throughout the region.
Mental Health Awareness Night sparked meaningful conversations within the school and reinforced the importance of creating supportive, inclusive environments where students feel seen and heard. Cheektowaga’s continued commitment to mental wellness is a strong example of how student-led service can create real and lasting impact beyond the scoreboard.
