About:
The Cold Spring Harbor Central School District hosted its third annual districtwide sports night, bringing together students, staff and families for an unforgettable evening of fun, competition and community spirit for the benefit of a local charity. This annual event continues the #CSHUnites initiative, reinforcing the board of education’s ongoing commitment to increasing family and community engagement through special K-12 programs.
The sold-out event, held at the Ralph Whitney Field House, drew over 1,200 attendees, all gathering in support of Corey’s Promise, a foundation dedicated to assisting families battling pediatric cancer. The fundraiser was held in remembrance of Corey Phelan, the late son of Jr./Sr. High School physical education and health teacher Chris Phelan. Corey, who courageously fought T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia before passing on October 12, 2022, was determined to support families facing the same hardships. His promise to alleviate the financial burden of pediatric cancer treatment was honored in a tremendous way, as the Cold Spring Harbor community came together to continue his legacy.
The friendly competition featured teams from all four district schools, each donning color-coded T-shirts and participating in events such as dodgeball and relay races. The night was filled with excitement—students cheered, held up signs, and joined in conga lines, while competitive energy surged through the staff and parent athletes vying for victory. In a thrilling upset, West Side School claimed the championship trophy, dethroning the two-time champions from Goosehill Primary School. A dramatic half-court basketball shot secured their 30-point lead, and their enthusiastic fans ensured they also took home the coveted Most School Spirit Award.
Superintendent of School Joseph Monastero and Athletic Director Mike Bongino, who served as the evening’s emcee, expressed their gratitude for the overwhelming support. Most notably, this year’s fundraiser generated over $20,000, nearly doubling the amount raised last year. The incredible generosity of the Cold Spring Harbor community will provide critical financial relief to families in need. To learn more about the foundation, go to https://www.coreyspromise.org.
