About:
Our head coach for boys ice hockey is Paul Quinlan. Homer is also combined with our neighbor Cortland for our interscholastic boys ice hockey team.
Student athletes from both the Homer and Cortland School districts/Cortland-Homer Golden Eagles High School Hockey program, designed and executed a player development program that raised money for charity based on achieving specific hockey goals and decision making outside of hockey activities.
Players participating in the player development program (U10 – U18 age groups) were able to earn points towards a season long total based on specific practice performance metrics as well as decision making external practice times. Players competed during practice and were granted points for attendance, blocked shots in small area games, Plus/Minus (a hockey specific statistic tracking defensive effort and compete level), and points assigned by coaches for various achievements and focus areas during practice. Off the ice players were able to earn points based on time spent working on hockey skills & knowledge of the game away from scheduled practice times (45 minutes of skill work or watching hockey), At home workouts or physical activity (three 30-minute workouts at home per week), and Nutrition (10 healthy food choices during the week). Players also earned points during a season long 3v3 competition run by the coaches.
Each team selected a charity/non-profit that the group wanted to support, and players solicited sponsors to donate a certain amount of money for each point earned during the competition, similar to a walk-a-thon. At the end of the season CCYHA teams had accumulated 8,465 points in total, including 933.5 points for the season long 3v3 tournament, 4,553.5 points for points earned during practice times, and 2,978 points earned for food, workout and hockey work outside of hockey time.
The CCYHA 18U team, with several members of the Cortland-Homer Golden Eagles raised funds to purchase 40 Cancer Care Kits, including high end lotion and lip balm to combat the impacts on the skin from Chemo therapy treatments for patients at the Golisano Upstate Cancer Center.
