About:
Families who visit the Connetquot Central School District’s pantry will now be able to add fresh vegetables to their shopping list. Prior to the holiday break, Helen B. Duffield Elementary School students, under the direction of school counselor Joanne Pisani, harvested the burgeoning tower gardens located throughout the school’s classrooms.
Ms. Pisani explained that several tower gardens were constructed in K-5 classrooms to remind students of the importance of healthy eating and to teach them how to take care of their minds and bodies by eating plant foods. After the plants are fully grown, students and teachers harvest the plants and typically enjoy healthy salads. However, this holiday, the lettuces, chard, basil, kale and other healthy greens are being collected by the district’s homeless liaison to distribute the harvest to needy families.
