About:
Fifth-graders at Mills Pond Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District spent the days leading up to the holiday break working on projects that give back to their local community.
Each fifth-grade teacher in the school set up a civic-minded center in the cafeteria with different activities on Dec. 20. The students made New Year’s cards for veterans at the local veteran’s hospital in one center. At another center, students crafted cards using recycled Christmas cards for seniors at the St. James Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center across the street. The crafting station had handmade snowflakes, complete with glitter, which will be delivered to the seniors along with their cards when the students make their holiday visit.
