About:
Students and student athletes at the Herricks Public Schools’ Denton Avenue School have been raising funds to help children in Africa obtain a clean water supply. The idea for this initiative was developed after a visit from Susan Verde, author of the book, The Water Princess. The story portrays the life of an African girl who must travel to bring water home to her village each day. Verde’s presentation was arranged through the PTA and the PARP Committee.
The students at Denton learned that 783 million people do not have access to a clean water supply, and they became motivated to make a difference. The school joined up with the Ryan’s Well organization to help provide water where it is most critically needed.
Students, staff members and families have been involved in penny drives, bake sales, sports fundraisers and more. So far, they have raised more than $2,000, and the efforts continue. All proceeds support Ryan’s Well.
