About:
The Division Avenue Girls Flag Football team combined community awareness with an impressive performance on the field during a special Autism Awareness game against Glen Cove, earning a 19-0 victory while celebrating inclusion and honoring senior Shannon Kirby.
The Lady Dragons recognized Shannon for her upcoming journey to Molloy University, where she will attend the university’s MOST Program in the fall. The evening served as a meaningful celebration of acceptance, support, and opportunity for all students.
After a hard-fought first half, Division Avenue broke through in the closing minutes of the second quarter when Jianna Testamark recorded a key interception to set up the offense deep in Glen Cove territory. Quarterback Ava Hunt connected with Abby Lahn for the game’s first touchdown before finding Testamark for the extra point, giving the Dragons a 7-0 lead heading into halftime.
The offense continued to shine in the second half as Shirley Zhirzhan hauled in a 59-yard touchdown reception from Hunt, while Toni Bruno added another late score to seal the 19-0 win.
Defensively, the Dragons were led by strong rushing performances from Zhirzhan and Kasey Parada. Sammy Castora contributed with an interception, while Testamark added her second takeaway late in the game to cap off a dominant defensive effort.
From honoring Autism Awareness to celebrating one of their own seniors, the night showcased what makes Division Avenue athletics special — teamwork, inclusion, leadership, and community both on and off the field.
