About:
Student from East Rockaway Jr./Sr. High School exhibited their award-winning creativity and design skills, along with a tireless commitment to helping those in need, as they took part in the annual Canstruction competition.
The East Rockaway team won two awards for their efforts, including “Best Student Design” and “Best Cancept”, for best use of labels. The winners were announced during the Oct. 30 awards reception.
Based on their theme “Ending Hunger is as Easy as 1…2…3…”, the students used 1,368 cans to recreate the iconic and nostalgic childhood wooden blocks that make up their design, which also spells out the word ACT to remind us that helping starts with just one ACT and that together, we CAN make a difference in the fight against hunger.
The Canstruction competition challenges teams to design and build a sculpture using only cans of food. The cans were purchased using donations collected through school fundraisers and will be donated to local food banks to help families in need.
The sculptures are on display now through Nov. 12 at RXR Plaza in Uniondale. Voting for the “People’s Choice Award” is open now through Nov. 12 by visiting CanstructionLI.org. For each $1 donation, a vote will be counted for your favorite team. We hope you’ll support the cause and cast your vote for East Rockaway High School.
