About:
The East Rockaway School District applauds the East Rockaway Jr./Sr. High School community for their successful Thanksgiving Food Drive.
Organized by the school’s Key Club, this annual event managed to collect an impressive 3,340 pounds of non-perishable food items. These generous contributions were then donated to the Long Island Cares Food Bank as part of their “Adopt-A-Family” program.
The remarkable dedication of their students and their awareness of the persistent food insecurity issues in the community led to this year’s food drive surpassing last year’s record. The collected food will provide much-needed support for an estimated 167 families in need.
The Key Club, consisting of 40 students from grades 7 to 12, put in approximately 200 hours of work for the food drive. Their efforts included decorating boxes, reaching out to local businesses for support, sorting items, packing bags and boxes, and assisting with loading onto the delivery truck. Despite being a smaller school with an annual graduating class of about 85 students, the creation of 161 boxes filled with over 3,340 pounds of food is a remarkable achievement.
Furthermore, among the Key Club members, 17 are student-athletes, with many serving as club board members.
