About:
Students across the Eastport-South Manor Central School District recently joined schools nationwide in celebrating Read Across America, a national initiative that promotes the joy and importance of reading for young learners.
Throughout the district’s elementary schools, students could be found with books in hand as they took part in a variety of engaging literacy activities. From discovering new stories to revisiting favorite books, classrooms and libraries were filled with excitement as students celebrated reading in fun and meaningful ways.
One of the highlights of the day was the opportunity for older elementary students to read to their younger peers. These shared reading experiences helped build connections between students while reinforcing the importance of literacy and mentorship within the school community.
At Eastport Elementary School and Dayton Avenue Elementary School, students also teamed up with their reading buddies during library class to create special crafts inspired by Dr. Seuss in celebration of the beloved author’s birthday on March 2. The creative activity gave students another opportunity to bond while honoring one of the most iconic figures in children’s literature.
First launched in 1998 by the National Education Association, Read Across America encourages schools across the country to inspire a lifelong love of reading in students. The celebration at Eastport-South Manor reflected that mission, bringing together students of different ages to learn, create, and share the joy of books.
By fostering collaboration and enthusiasm for reading, the district continues to build a strong foundation for literacy while strengthening connections among students throughout the school community.
