About:
Eastview High School recently used its platform on the basketball court to support cancer awareness by taking part in a Coaches vs. Cancer initiative.
During the event, players wore special pink warm-up shirts and completed a poster recognizing loved ones in their lives who have been impacted by cancer. A brief message was also shared over the public address system to help raise awareness and encourage support for those affected by the disease.
While the initiative was small in scope and did not include fundraising or student-athlete involvement in the planning process, it marked an important first step in using athletics as a way to promote community awareness and advocacy. The Coaches vs. Cancer program is a nationwide effort that brings together coaches, student-athletes, and communities to highlight the importance of cancer education, support, and prevention.
Eastview’s participation demonstrated how even simple actions can help foster empathy, unity, and service-minded leadership among student-athletes. School leaders shared that they hope to expand the initiative in the future by increasing student involvement and growing the overall impact of the event.
