About:
Sharing in the spirit of the holiday season, the staff at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School in the Port Jefferson School District sponsored a holiday tree in the annual Port Jefferson Village Festival of Trees.
Set up in the Port Jefferson Village Center, the tree’s empty green branches were soon filled with new hats, gloves, scarves and mittens, generously donated by students, staff and families in the school to create a colorful “Giving Tree.”
Kindergarten teacher Melissa Martin came up with the idea to help individuals in the community by making it a schoolwide effort that can be viewed in a public setting. Since the trees are on display throughout the holiday season, it was the perfect venue. The items, earmarked for donation to a local charity, will be distributed to children after the seasonal exhibit.
