About:
First through fifth graders at Lee Avenue Elementary School in Hicksville held a fundraiser on Feb. 11 inviting students to donate a $1 or more for the chance to chew gum in school to benefit the P.S. I Love You Day organization. In addition to the gum chewing fundraiser, coordinated by the Lee Avenue PTA that raised over $350, students wore purple to show unity for the cause.
P.S. I Love You Day is always held on the second Friday in February and this year marked the 12th year of the day created by Brooke DiPalma in honor of her passed father, a retired NYPD officer, who took his life. The organization’s mission is to bring awareness to the importance of mental health and decrease bullying. School communities are encouraged to wear purple in order to foster kindness and a welcoming environment, and educate others that mental health is just as important as physical health.
