About:

This winter we have 18 Elmira Express Student-Athletes from the 9th Grade Broadway Academy building who are working on a service-learning project. We have teamed up with Jessica Janowsky, the district Social Emotional Coordinator, who has reached out to a couple of the local nursing homes, to create handmade holiday stockings and ornaments for the residents.

Holiday time can be rough for residents at nursing homes, we wanted to let them know that they were being thought of. Our hope is that these holiday crafts can provide residents with a little extra holiday joy.

The Student-Athletes will be working with classes from third through sixth grade from Hendy, Parley Coburn, Beecher and Broadway Elementary.

We are creating 500 stockings which will be filled with numerous student-crafted ornaments. Each resident will receive one stocking.

Our athletes will be teaching the elementary students how to create these holiday crafts and will be assisting them in the creation.

Student-Athletes will have volunteered over 15 hours of time for this project success. Outside of this project the athletes have spent nearly 10 hours assisting teachers at Broadway Elementary in their classrooms working with students, one on one or in small groups, focusing on reading and math skill activities.
