About:
At Elmira High School, jersey dedications have become a meaningful tradition within Elmira Express athletics, giving senior student-athletes the opportunity to recognize individuals who played an important role in their journey.
This year, three seniors from the girls’ basketball program each selected a mentor who supported, challenged, and believed in them throughout their academic and athletic experiences.
Senior Zy Cade dedicated her jersey to Ms. Voorhees of Parley Coburn Elementary School. When Zy faced a significant illness that caused her to miss a considerable amount of school, Ms. Voorhees went above and beyond—spending hours after school helping her catch up and ensuring she never felt alone in the process.
Senior Lizzie Hunter honored Mr. Manwaring of Broadway Academy. During Lizzie’s ninth-grade year, Mr. Manwaring pushed her to grow both as an athlete and as a person. His high expectations helped shape her into the leader and student-athlete she is today.
Senior Zhamir Harris dedicated her jersey to Coach Nas (Anasah Demember), a mentor who challenged her on the court while providing steady encouragement and support off it. Zhamir credits Coach Nas with helping her navigate challenges and holding her to a high standard every step of the way.
The jersey dedication ceremony serves as a reminder that athletics are about far more than competition. It highlights the relationships, mentorship, and encouragement that help student-athletes grow into confident young leaders.
Moments like this reflect the strong sense of community within Elmira City School District—showing that behind every senior’s success stands a network of educators, coaches, and mentors who helped guide them along the way.
