About:
On September 11, Covert Avenue School students and staff gathered outside with members of American Legion Post 1033 for a heartfelt Patriot Day tribute, joining together as a community to honor and remember the heroes of 9/11 during the school’s annual commemoration.
Principal Alison Gunn welcomed the scholars, staff and veterans to the assembly, followed by the raising of the flag and Pledge of Allegiance. The school community recognized the significance of the day and honored local veterans in attendance with a moment of silence.
The fifth grade chorus, under the direction of music teacher Sheryl Turk, sang beautiful renditions of “The Star-Spangled Banner” and “American Tears.”
Assistant Principal Valerie Donoghue delivered words of reflection, and Assistant Principal Jessica Trione read a tribute poem, further reminding students and staff of the significance of remembrance and unity.
To reinforce the importance of the day, scholars crafted commemorative hats and took part in meaningful classroom lessons that enriched their understanding of the historical impact and civic importance of 9/11.
“Let us carry forward the lessons of today: kindness, respect and unity,” Ms. Gunn said. “September 11th reminds us how important it is to look out for one another, to stand strong together and to always show compassion.”
