About:
Fifth-graders at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District are serving as Santa’s elves during the holiday season. As part of the annual toy drive, students in John Coyne’s class travel the school each day and collect items generously donated by their peers.
The toys will be donated to the John Theissen Children’s Foundation, which assists sick and underprivileged children. The school has been participating in the collection drive for more than a decade and has collected more than 11,000 toys since the first year.
The theme for this year’s toy drive is kindness. All students who make a donation received a pencil and kindness-themed coloring sheet. The completed drawings will be collected and then hung around the school to spread holiday cheer and goodwill.
