About:
The Eastport South Manor Boys Varsity team participated in a Student Build with Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk. This program encourages and enables students to help eliminate poverty as Habitat Suffolk builds affordable single family housing throughout Suffolk County.
The team raised $1,400 that goes directly toward materials needed to build a home. They were able to volunteer their time to help families move out of unacceptable housing into decent affordable housing. Spending the day unloading and hanging sheetrock, building a form for a patio, mixing and pouring cement, installing insulation, and some good team bonding as well.
In addition to the community service they earned and the building skills they obtained, they were also provided with the knowledge of how a nonprofit organization works and the importance and impact fundraising has to offer their neighboring communities. One of the greatest things about participating in this program is they will forever be a part of something that has changed the life of another family, a family whose dreams are becoming a reality because of their volunteerism and dedication efforts.
Even though the work was hard, all of the boys had a wonderful experience and look forward to volunteering on another build site. It really made them feel good about giving back to a family in need. What a powerful feeling when you are directly affecting the lives of others.
