Location:

About:

To bring some joy to children battling cancer, students at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District created warrior necklaces with inspirational messages. The project was spearheaded by art teacher Melinda Gibbons.

Fifth graders made close to 100 necklaces which will donated to Love Smiles, a nonprofit pediatric cancer foundation, and will be added to care boxes for children undergoing treatment.

Students designed the necklaces using Photopea, an online photo editor, on their Chromebooks. They each chose a motivational word such as “brave” or “strong” to include over the background. Ms. Gibbons printed out the designs and students placed them in necklace bezels before adding the string. The project allowed students to explore digital art while also performing an act of kindness of others.
