About:
On Saturday, May 3rd, the Penfield community came together for the annual Strike Out Cancer event, a meaningful day that blends the spirit of high school sports with the power of giving back. Hosted by Penfield Baseball and, for the first time ever, Penfield Softball, the event welcomed teams from Fairport and Rush-Henrietta for a day of friendly competition and heartfelt fundraising.
Penfield Varsity Baseball faced off against Fairport, while Penfield Softball took on the Rush-Henrietta Varsity and JV squads. The inclusion of softball marked a milestone for the event, broadening its reach and impact. Rebecca McEnroe of Penfield spearheaded the coordination, working closely with boosters and representatives from all participating schools to ensure the event’s success.
Each year, Strike Out Cancer honors someone affected by cancer. This year, the community rallied around Ryder Maciaszek, a brave elementary student from Fairport who has been battling clival chordoma, a rare and chemo-resistant brain cancer, since the age of six. Donations raised from the event were directed to the Chordoma Foundation—an organization that has been instrumental in Ryder’s fight.
As part of the fundraising effort, players and families sold and wore specially designed t-shirts, generously donated by Crazy Dog T-Shirts. These shirts were proudly displayed both in school and at the event. Additionally, Jersey Mike’s Subs supported the cause by donating hundreds of sub cards, which participants redeemed in exchange for a donation. This initiative alone brought in $1,287.
The event also featured support from local businesses and organizations. Card My Yard provided a vibrant and interactive photo spot, while Buddha Burger and J&S Food Trucks served up delicious food and donated a portion of their proceeds. Media outlet Primetime 585 offered stellar coverage of the Varsity Baseball game, helping spread awareness and highlight the community’s spirit.
Thanks to the incredible collaboration and generosity of all involved, Strike Out Cancer raised an impressive $9,650 for the Chordoma Foundation—including the contribution from Jersey Mike’s. Even with less-than-ideal weather, fans came out in full force, showing that the heart of the Penfield and Fairport communities is as strong as ever.
