About:
We had our Varsity Ice Hockey team (22 athletes) volunteer at Foodlink which provides food to food pantries across 10 counties in the upstate NY region. We were there from 9am till noon on Saturday, Nov. 16th. The staff had the boys work on taking boxes of food (and other products) from local supermarkets, sorting them on the assembly line, and putting them into the appropriate containers to be sent off to the food pantries. The boys were also taught how to use the trash/recycling compactor for all the food that had to be thrown away.
I think it is important for the boys to do some community service during their season. I think working with our local agencies give kids a sense of purpose and provides them with an opportunity to become active members of their community. I think it also allows them to provide a service to those who need it most. Last year, we volunteered at the NY Special Olympics in Rochester, NY, and in years past we have partnered up with our local ambulance for their Fill-an-Ambulance Food Drive they have this time of year.
