About:
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona football team came out in full force last weekend to assist with the Special Olympics Regional Floor Hockey Tournament. The two-day tournament was held at the NAU Health and Learning Center on Jan. 18-19 and was a major success for all involved.
“This is an event that is as beneficial to us as it is for the Special Olympics athletes,” said assistant football coach Dave Reeves. “We look forward to having a long relationship with the Northern Arizona Special Olympics.”
Reeves coordinated the event in conjunction with Special Olympics and 40 members of the Lumberjack football team was on hand to volunteer over the two days. The NAU student-athletes helped out in a variety of ways including setting up the courts, keeping score, keeping track of time, updating scoreboards and breaking down the courts after the tournament. Most importantly, they were right there to encourage the tournament athletes and participants and celebrated with them during the awards ceremony.
All together, the team volunteered a total of 232.5 hours of community service for the event continuing their season-long efforts to help in the community.
