Thirteen students from Freeport High School spent Martin Luther King, Jr. Day participating in the Molloy University “United We Serve” Day of Service in honor of the activist’s birthday on Jan. 15.
Representing the high school’s Culture Club and Key Club, the students, along with students from other schools, families and community members from across Long Island assembled Smile Bags for children and teens in local hospitals, Snack Bags for guests of the Mary Brennan INN Soup Kitchen and created Love Letter packets for families preparing their children to learn to read entering kindergarten. They also participated in a hands-on CPR training session to help save lives in an emergency situation.
In addition to the workshops, the Freeport High School students took part in the Day of Service’s Resource Fair which allowed students to talk with representatives from various service organizations that help others. They also listened to the event’s keynote address presented by Jean Kelly, Chief Executive Officer at The INN and Mary Brennan INN Soup Kitchen.
