About:
Freeport Public Schools took part in solemn tributes to remember the events of Sept. 11, paying respect to the lives lost and celebrating the dedication of local heroes who continue to keep Freeport safe. The day of remembrance served as a moment of reflection, unity and education for students, ensuring they understand the lasting impact of the day on the nation and the strength that arose from the tragedy.
At Freeport High School, the Navy JROTC led a schoolwide memorial, with announcements highlighting the significance of the day’s events. They also joined in the community’s observance by participating in a special ceremony at the Bayview Firehouse 3 Memorial, where they paid tribute to the victims and survivors.
New Visions Elementary School hosted its annual Heroes Day, inviting members of the Freeport Fire Department and the Freeport Police Department to be part of the commemoration. Students and staff wore the colors of the American flag—red, white and blue—as symbols of peace, hope and unity. Priscilla Quiroz, a fourth grade student, shared the poem “Heroes,” after which the entire school observed a moment of silence as “If You’re Out There” by John Legend played in the background.
Superintendent Ms. Fia Davis expressed the importance of honoring the day. “Sept. 11 was a day that changed our country, and all of us forever, and I want to thank each of you for taking the time to recognize this day,” she said. “This moment is about never forgetting the sacrifice of the lives lost, the sacrifice of the emergency workers who ran toward danger and not away from it, and the civilians who were simply going about their lives. We honor them today, so they are never forgotten.”
