About:
In 2019, Girl Scouts in Troop 2566 began working toward achieving their Silver Award, which is the highest level award a Cadette can earn. Their work included beatification projects within the Town of Southold.
Much to the delight of the students, they began a courtyard renovation at Cutchogue East Elementary School. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, their work was temporarily put on hold when schools were closed earlier this year.
Once the new school year started and schools were opened, Mattituck Jr./Sr. High School eighth grade students Sadie Hudock, Haley Lake, Callie McLean, and Rebecca Nyilas,
were determined to complete their project. Now more than ever, the girls felt it was important to create a beautiful outdoor learning space for classes to utilize when the weather permitted.
The girls made improvements to the elementary school’s courtyard by planting more than 100 daffodil bulbs, creating garden signs, refurbishing five picnic tables and a bench, and painting them in the school’s colors which are blue and gold. They also added an upcycled art project of soda bottle flowers to add a pop of color during the grey winter months.
Thanks to their hard work and commitment to complete the project they started, the new spruced up courtyard will be enjoyed for years to come. The courtyard was dedicated in a small ceremony with the Girl Scouts, their Leader Lynn Nyilas and Dr. Kathleen Devine, principal of Cutchogue East Elementary School. In attendance. “The courtyard is a space where the children can sit outdoors and be with their teachers and classmates,” said Dr. Devine. “The picnic tables and benches are painted in the school’s blue and gold colors, which the children absolutely love. The entire school thanks the Girl Scouts for their contribution, which will be long lasting for all children to enjoy.” Many thanks also to Jim Gorman of Mattituck for his donation of the garden dedication sign.
