About:
We started this program a few years ago to help out a local student-athlete who lost his equipment in a house fire.
As a result of the generosity we received, we were able to outfit some players who might have otherwise had the chance to play baseball or softball with gloves, cleats and other items necessary to play.
We were lucky enough to receive a donation of used gloves from a graduate who works for a professional baseball organization a couple of years ago. We have since given all of those gloves out and want to collect more so that they can offer them to any child who wishes to play baseball or softball. I am looking to eliminate all barriers that may prevent my student-athletes from getting involved in interscholastic athletics and when it comes to baseball & softball a glove can be a huge barrier.
Also, I have seen the kind of WASTE that happens in affluent schools where gloves and cleats are left behind in locker rooms after the season is over by kids who know they can afford new ones next year. I am hopeful that my colleagues are willing and able to donate those discarded items so we can give them to those in need.
The athletes spread the word on their social media outlets (typically the varsity softball & baseball teams), if they receive a donation, they take it and bring it into the athletic department.
So roughly, 25-30 kids are involved.
