About:
Students, staff and families of Dutch Broadway School collected new items for those in need as part of the annual Giving Tree activity, a tradition at the school for more than 10 years.
School social worker Fanny Iglesias coordinated the community service activity this year with the assistance of peer mediators Stacie Calixte, Addisyn English, Videsh Muneshwar and Kassie Rosier. The sixth graders helped to set up and decorate the tree prior to the donations being added. Peer mediators are chosen by teachers every year as students who exert a positive influence on others.
By the middle of December, the tree was overflowing with hats, scarves, gloves, socks and other items. Prior to the school’s winter break, a representative from the Interfaith Nutrition Network in Hempstead visited Dutch Broadway to collect the items.
“I always tell the students we need to pay it forward,” said Iglesias. “We need to think about those who are less fortunate than us.”
