About:
Students at Grand Avenue Middle School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central School District were asked to bring in any unopened sweets and treats the first week of November, and on Nov. 7, the Builders Club packaged it all up and readied the boxes for a shipment overseas.
The project is part of Operation Sweet Gratitude, where leftover Halloween candy can be put to good use for military troops serving abroad. Collecting, packaging and shipping were handled by Builders Club members, who are advised by Spanish teacher Sean Doherty.
“This is just one of the many service projects that the Builders Club will participate in,” he said. “It’s a great group of 30 students who attend each meeting and are eager to help out in any way they can.”
