Guilderland Softball Swings into Action with a Community Food Drive

This past Saturday, the Guilderland Varsity Softball team turned their play day into a meaningful opportunity to support students in need at their school. Led by Head Coach Mandy Yocono, the team collected snack donations for the Farnsworth Middle School Backpack Program, which provides food for students to take home over weekends and school breaks.

Coach Yocono, who also teaches at Farnsworth, saw the event as a perfect chance to give back. “We often run food drives at school for the backpack program,” she said. “I thought this play day would be a great opportunity to gather more donations and support the program.”

Prior to the event, Coach Yocono reached out to the counselors and social workers who oversee the backpack program to find out which items were most needed. At the time, snacks were in high demand, and the team focused their collection efforts accordingly.

The initiative highlighted the team’s commitment to giving back to the school community that supports them. “We’re fortunate to receive funding from the school for equipment, transportation, and field improvements,” said Yocono. “This was a way for us to support a donation-based program that directly helps our peers and classmates.”

Through this effort, the Guilderland Varsity Softball team demonstrated that the values of teamwork, generosity, and community spirit extend well beyond the playing field.
