About:
We volunteer every year at the start of the Mohawk Hudson Marathon. We have an on-going relationship with HMRRC and they depend upon us for the extra hands for the fun (but busy!) start of the marathon.
We had 50 athletes and 2 coaches volunteer for 2 hours. We set up the first water station, help crowd control/parking, direct runners to the needed areas (bag drop off, bib pick up, portapotties, start, etc.), collect and label bags
at bag drop off, cheer on the runners at the start and then do a cleaning up sweep of the entire area. This is a meaningful service opportunity as it provides the athletes not only a chance to give back to their sport, but it
is powerful for them to start to envision that they too could someday run 26.2 miles! There are always conversations at this event with our athletes admiring the fortitude of the marathon runners and starting to speculate what
time they could run 26.2 miles in….
Our team has a hearty volunteer component. In the past 6 months our athletes have volunteered:
– Assisting running Modified track meets > 12 athletes x 1.5 hours (x 2 home meets)
– Assisting in clean up (inside and out) of Gallupville House Community Center > 14 athletes x 3 hours
– Assisting in an Egg Scavenger Hunt for children at Gallupville House Community Center > 12 athletes x 3 hours
– Raising money (over $1200) for area Food Pantry by running 48 miles in 48 hours. – Alex Young & Brett Sabatino ran 48 miles in 48 hours to raise $1382 for the Guilderland Food Pantry > 2 athletes x 4 hours of preparation + 6 hours of running
– Assisting in Summer Youth Track Program > 15 athletes x 8 hours
– Assisting in Guilderland Foundation Golf Tournament > 5 athletes x 6 hours
– Assisting in Fall Youth XC Program > 5 athletes x 6 hours
– Assisting in running Modified XC meet > 16 athletes x 1.5 hours
– Buddy running with athlete with special needs
> 2 athletes x 15 hours
– Ice cream social & Touch a Truck Experience
> 14 athletes x 3 hours
We have a robust culture of service on our team and we are proud of our athletes for their commitment to service and sport.
