About:
Toys, mittens and hats are some of the items that the Student Council has been collecting for the holidays at Seaford Harbor Elementary School. The donations will benefit the local John Theissen Children’s Foundation, which supports sick and underprivileged kids.
Student Council members have been promoting the holiday drives, encouraging their classmates to donate. Adviser Kerry Hansen, a fifth-grade teacher, said the school has a long-standing partnership with the foundation, as it has been collecting toys for years. The winter accessory drive started last year.
After the collections end, the Student Council will visit the John Theissen Children’s Foundation’s Family Fun Center in Wantagh to drop off all the items and tour the facility. Ms. Hansen said that she hopes it spurs in the children a desire to volunteer as they get older.
“The purpose of the Student Council visiting the center is for them to see the concrete results of giving,” she said.
