About:
Several student groups at Harborfields High School – National Honor Society, Harborfields Alliance for Community Outreach, Global Justice and student government – recently joined forces for a “HF Unites 4 Ukraine” project, hosting communitywide events to promote awareness and collect support, essential items and monetary donations for refugees in Ukraine.
“Our students really wanted to come together as a community at this time to help those in Ukraine,” Assistant Principal Allison Joyce said.
Students and staff at the high school and the other three buildings in the district – Oldfield Middle School, Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School and Washington Drive Primary School – were encouraged to wear blue and yellow on March 24 to unite for Ukraine. A “Donate and Dedicate a Bag” activity involved students from each school decorating white bags with positive messages, prayers or pictures.
The “HF Unites 4 Ukraine” main event took place on the evening of March 27 at Centerport United Methodist Church, with students, staff and community members in attendance. Many high school students spoke about the events unfolding in Ukraine and why they felt it is necessary to help. The finished bags were placed and displayed as a luminary during the event.
