About:

This week the varsity softball team at Harborfields held a “Mental Health Awareness game” bringing attention to the importance of mental health.

The Lady Tornadoes were able to bring awareness to the topic by decorating the field, wearing specialized shirts for the game and raising funds for a local mental health organization.

The girls competed in their game against Westhampton Beach in honor of those who struggle with mental health issues. The team wore green shirts, the color of mental health awareness ribbon with “keep talking” printed in large font on the back to encourage people to discuss the importance of mental health and to be open to having a conversation.

Each day, mental health issues affect people of all ages. Raising awareness of mental health is vital so those who suffer from it can seek help and know that there are plenty of support networks that are there to help.

We had 13 athletes participate, with two coaches. The girls were great. They posted our awareness game to social media, spread the word at school, wore the tshirts that we sold to fans and spoke to anyone that came up to our tshirt sale table about the importance of mental health, where to go at the school if they need help and assured their peers they could always come to them to talk. Truly amazing girls we have on our team! They even spoke to their teachers about it to help spread awareness. Over all I would say about 10 hours was put into everything, the decorations, the selling, the communication and organization of the entire event. The event was held on our field at Harborfields HS on Monday 5/24 vs Westhampton Beach HS. Westhampton beach players and fans  made donations to the cause as well which was very thoughtful! It was a respectable game between both both teams. And the umpires also made donations! Very nice day all around.
