About:
The Island Trees Bulldog family came together in an inspiring show of unity, compassion, and purpose as they tipped off the 3rd Annual Haggerty Memorial Classic Girls Basketball Tournament—a heartfelt tribute to Coach Dan Haggerty and a powerful reminder of the lasting impact one individual can have on a community.
Opening night was filled with both energy and emotion as athletes, families, and supporters packed the gym to celebrate Coach Haggerty’s legacy and rally behind the ongoing fight against leukemia. The tournament not only honors the sport he loved but also advances the mission of raising awareness and support for those affected by the disease.
Island Trees was proud to welcome the Roslyn, Great Neck South, and Mineola Girls Basketball teams, whose participation added to the spirit of camaraderie and shared purpose. The evening also highlighted the enthusiasm of the Island Trees Varsity Cheerleaders and the spirited young athletes of the St. James CYO 4th Grade Girls Basketball team, who brought extra excitement and heart to the event.
Behind the scenes, the Bulldog family demonstrated what it truly means to stand together. The girls on the roster, along with the assistant coach and team manager, dedicated significant time and effort to bringing this tournament to life. The support of the booster club was equally invaluable—special recognition goes to Jeanne Carbonaro, Jennifer McGowan, and Cindy Schmidt, whose countless volunteer hours helped ensure a seamless and meaningful two-day event.
In total, players contributed an estimated 8–10 volunteer hours each between preparations and tournament duties, with additional student volunteers assisting throughout the weekend and creating posters and decorations beforehand.
Coach Haggerty’s memory continues to shine through the spirit of service, resilience, and love displayed by all involved. The Island Trees community once again showed what it means to rally together—on and off the court—to honor a beloved coach and support an important cause.
