About:
Islip High School students and staff recently demonstrated a strong commitment to giving back to the community, joining forces to provide Thanksgiving baskets for 10 local families in need. Organized by social workers Shari Pennington and Jennifer Stosch along with club advisers Sarah Ito, Danielle Martello, Nancy Reagan, Megan Schierhorst, Kerri Schmalacker and Patricia Whitehouse, the drive saw student groups including the National Honor Society, World Language Honor Society, Interact Club, Athletes Helping Athletes and Functional Academic Class donating food, organizing and inventorying the donations, and decorating and packing the boxes.
Islip alumna Kylie Ohlmiller and her KO17 Lacrosse organization stepped in to donate a turkey, milk and a dozen eggs for each family, while school staff and teachers as well as the Emerald Woods Homeowners Association donated gift cards for the families, enabling them to complete the holiday meals.
