About:
Our community service efforts for the Girls Flag Football team began as a way for our girls to learn about giving back to the community. As coaches, we try to teach our student athletes not only about the sport they are playing, but also about being a well-rounded member of the communities they live in. Our first opportunity was around Christmas time. Andrea Hankey, the JC Connects Community Schools Coordinator, had posted on her private Facebook page that she was looking for donations that would be given to local Oncology patients. Upon seeing this, I reached out to her to see if there was anything that our Girls Flag Football team could help with. We were able to get a group of them together, along with our school’s Key Club members, to help pack all of the bags with the donations–blankets, gift cards and a few other items. Following this, we were able to drop off the bags to the Oncology office for the patients. The girls were honored to be awarded a certificate of appreciation by our Board of Education for their efforts.
The latest community service project we began was in response to our local Humane Society looking for donations to help keep their shelves stocked. So far, we have collected dog food, canned chicken, canned pumpkin, gift cards and a cash donation, with the hopes of adding some more items like cat food and other needs. We are running the collection through March 7, 2025. We will then, with as many of our girls as we can get together, take our donations to the Humane Society. My hope is that we can also find a few dates that we can volunteer as a group at the Humane Society.
