JJCR Softball united with Fox Lane and North Salem for a heartfelt “For Brooke” game—a tribute that brought players, coaches, families, and the entire community together to remember and celebrate the life of a young athlete who inspired everyone. From the moment the first pitch was thrown, it was clear that this event was about far more than wins and losses; it was about honor, unity, and the enduring spirit of Brooke.
Remembering Brooke’s Spirit
Brooke’s freshman year was marked by extraordinary courage and resilience. Battling illness not once but twice, she showed everyone around her what it means to fight with grace. Although the cancer ultimately took her life, the impact of her passion for the game and her “Never Give Up” attitude continues to resonate here in her community. Last summer, JJCR Softbal supported a youth clinic in Brooke’s honor, providing coaching, encouragement, and camaraderie to young players. That event laid the foundation for what would become this special tribute game.
As teams and fans gathered on the field, Brooke’s presence was felt in every chant, every cheer, and every “Never Give Up” T-shirt worn by players. The tournament consisted of two spirited matchups, each game played not only for a place in the standings but also for the memory of Brooke.
A Community United
When Brooke’s family addressed the crowd between games, the emotion was palpable. In a moving speech, Brooke’s mother shared:
“Thank you to everyone here that supported Brooke during her fight. Brooke felt the love from everyone on both of these teams today, and we are grateful and appreciative for all that you did for her and us. Today, as you play and remember Brooke’s spirit, remember to ‘Never Give Up’ like your shirts say. But remember—it’s not just a slogan; it’s how she lived and how we honor her. Thank you for loving our girl and for still being part of her team.”
Those words echoed throughout the stadium, reminding every athlete and spectator why we play. It wasn’t about statistics or trophies, it was about community. Seeing young players pull on those “Never Give Up” jerseys, called to mind Brooke’s unwavering determination.
