About:
John Ramirez, a senior at MacArthur High School in Levittown, received the Shelter Hero Award from the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter. After a visit to the shelter located on Beltagh Avenue in Wantagh, John decided to hold a drive to collect needed items for the animals who reside there. During a two-week period, he managed to collect $600 in cash, as well as beds, toys, treats and other needed items on a list provided by employees.
“When I walked through the hallway at the shelter, it brought me to tears that so many animals needed to be adopted” he said. An avid animal lover, John said he plans to continue donating his time to the animal shelter and is looking forward to being able to work directly with the animals upon turning 18 years of age. In the meantime, John is working hard toward his goal of graduation and was named one of the high school’s 74 top seniors who attended the annual General’s Breakfast. John is most interested in business and computer science and is a member of the Business Honor Society. He plans on continuing his studies in computer science this coming fall at one of Long Island’s local colleges.
