About:
As part of the Levittown Public Schools Summer Reading Extravaganza, the district’s English department hosted its 2021 winter showcase for summer reading entitled Lights! Camera! Kindness! Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s event was held virtually for all students at Jonas E. Salk Middle School and Wisdom Lane Middle School. Students were encouraged to submit videos connecting to the message of their 2020 summer reading book, “Pay It Forward” by Catherine Ryan Hyde.
Thirty-one videos were presented during the pre-recorded virtual showcase, featuring Jonas E. Salk and Wisdom Lane students performing acts of kindness and encouraging others to pay it forward. Student organizations such as Jonas E. Salk Middle School’s Connections Club and the Salk Junior Leaders submitted videos of ways that they have given back this year. Others submitted individual and class videos about how they facilitated food drives, clothing drives, card drives for veterans and more. All students who participated in the showcase were awarded with medals engraved with “Readers are Leaders.”
Although the event could not be held in-person, the virtual showcase allowed the Levittown community to connect and celebrate all the outstanding acts of kindness that the middle school students have performed during this pandemic. It was also a great way to spark some ideas on how others can pay it forward.
