About:
At Longwood High School, giving back to the community is a tradition that goes beyond the football field. This year, the Longwood Varsity Football team had the incredible opportunity to support an inspiring event that brought together students, teachers, and families in a meaningful way. The Middle School hosted its First Annual Abilities Awareness Day, with strong support from the Best Buddies program, SEPTO (Special Education Parent Teacher Organization), and the Varsity Football team.
This event was an opportunity for students to learn about and understand the diverse abilities of their peers in a fun and interactive way. The day was filled with engaging stations designed to promote acceptance and foster a deeper understanding of the challenges some of our classmates face daily. From learning how to communicate through sign language to experiencing activities blindfolded, the event was all about fostering empathy, breaking down barriers, and building friendships.
The Longwood Varsity Football team played an essential role in the success of the event, participating in the various stations, leading by example, and showing the students that being a leader means caring for others. By giving their time and energy, the football players helped make the day memorable and impactful for everyone involved.
The collaboration between the Best Buddies program, SEPTO, and the football team ensured that the event was a huge success, creating a space where understanding, kindness, and inclusion could shine. It was heartwarming to see so many students actively participating and interacting with peers of all abilities, strengthening the bond of community within Longwood.
Abilities Awareness Day was more than just an event—it was a celebration of diversity, kindness, and the power of supporting one another. With such a strong turnout and involvement, this event is sure to become a yearly tradition at Longwood, and we look forward to seeing how it continues to inspire future generations of students.
The Varsity Football team’s involvement in this event exemplified the core values of leadership and service. Whether on the field or in the community, they continue to set an example for others to follow.
